• I’m new to WordPress. I am testing this blog for a client and want to be able to seamlessly show it to her without bumbling. It was relatively simple to upload and set up but I’m stumped on Themes and Publishing. Themes. I have downloaded a few themes and uploaded them to wp-content/themes/’themename’ and when I try to access the theme thru presentation under admin rights ALL my themes come up as Broken. All state that the template is missing. This includes the default and the classic themes. Publishing I have attempted to publish an entry and I can create it and view it but if I click Publish nothing happens. They remain in my drafts and I can go back in to them and then click publish and it takes me to a site that shows it but if I go back to the main page it comes up with an error Not Found Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here. I waited thinking maybe there is a delay in posting but I came back 30 mins later and it still is showing as a draft. Is it something that I’m doing wrong? I have uploaded all the files again to my site https://www.advancedrepairtech.com/~melissa

Our cobalt server is a linux based system. The programmer set this up for me on Friday and he is on vacation. I’ve emailed him and he has that set up on an automated response so I won’t be able to talk to him about that until Next Monday. When I first set up the blog I actually created a directory on the site named ‘BLOG’ but that wouldn’t work AT ALL. So I removed that and uploaded to the root (web) folder This then allowed me to ‘install’ and see the blog. As I go thru this thing I see there are other things that don’t appear to be working either(ie. users – I know that two ppl have signed up but it doesn’t show them in there and the Themes editor comes up with an error that it’s not there). I am going to completely get rid of it – other than the db, as I don’t know how to get rid of that since the programmer set it up for me- and re-upload everything again sigh 3rd time’s a charm right?

I however won’t be able to do that until later today So I will let you know how it goes. Thank you for your help.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

If re-upping the files doesn’t work then I think you’re gonna have to wait for the programmer and get him to kill off the db and start again.

There are other things not working with the tilde? Heck that is a surprise. I would fire the geek.

Cornell_Finch Thank you for the crossed fingers ?? but it didn’t work. I completely dumped the contents of the DB, reloaded all the files back up to the site and I still have broken items. So I have sent the programmer an email and he will get back to me probably on Friday or Saturday so unless I want to buy a domain and have it hosted I’ll just wait.

Root – ppl don’t like to be spoken DOWN to. I am in the technical support business myself and there is nothing that ppl hate worse than to be treated as you are treating me. You have been absolutely no help to me you only had derogatory comments to me. I believe that I read in the ‘rules’ that ppl should try to be nice. I have very little knowledge of programming THAT is why I came HERE to get help. Not to be belittled and berated by someone who obviously thinks his crap doesn’t stink. Please refrain from posting to me in the future as I see anything that you ‘say’ not worthy of my attention

some ppl just dont get root ??
Granted I do, because I post similar ‘to the point’ remarks.

I recommend rather than focusing on his language, focusing on the theory.

fwiw, I looked at your site not long after you posted your first post — this isnt normal:

    https://www.advancedrepairtech.com/~melissa/wp-content/themes/default/
    https://www.advancedrepairtech.com/~melissa/wp-content/themes/default/index.php
and the other themes that you had installed shows a similar “blank page”.

Called like so, there should be a very prominent error returned.

whooami – I understand what you’re saying…Thank you ?? if he had given me any theory or something constructive to go by I would have thought much higher of him. Yet when I asked him to explain the problem he said nothing just another derogatory post. I have no need for ppl like that.

So what would that mean then? I uploaded them incorrectly? I maintained the same file structure that they were extracted in. I did the same thing you did and tried to call each theme by typing in the entire URL. I too got the blank page. But don’t know what is causing it. Also when I gained access to the database all the info was there. My posts and what not but I can’t see any of it thru the site nor thru admin

nope, assuming there is the theme’s index.php at the path i am clicking to, theyre uploaded properly.

I just went to the folder on my hard drive and opened the default/index.php in firefox and it came up with the error what you’re looking for isn’t there.

    hdd?

is this site on your harddrive? what you see on your hdd (errors) isnt going to reflect what you see on a live site.

Besides which, my point i getting lost — your site IS displaying the default theme, so obviously there is a theme index.php where it belongs, and the theme is uploaded correctly.

What im pointing out is another symptom of something possibly being wrong. On the other hand, your geek may just be suppressing error messages.

Which, at this point, isnt helpful, since error messages might be exactly what you need to see.

The site is on the store server. But I went to the folders that I uploaded and attempted to open the index.php file in firefox because either way it should have shown. The index.php file will still call the same files from the same folders on my local system as it does on the server

The index.php file will still call the same files from the same folders on my local system as it does on the server

No it wont, unless you are (locally) running a web server, have php installed, etc…

True. There are multiple things not working on the uploaded site. I did view the source and it’s bringing up the default/index.php. It’s just frustrating. Thank you for your help. I really do appreciate it.

OH I understand what you mean!!! I know next to nothing about programming. I know that HTML will call the same files. I work with HTML files all the time. NOT the SAME as PHP…Thank you

The tilde character in Linux is a shorthand notation for “the Home directory of [whoever follows]”. Web server uri (s) run on a completely different set up. The tilde if any is mapped by the server admin to the uri. But it categorically should not be in the domain name. How can you fix the URL in admin for example?. How do the other files know the relative file paths? I was one of the first people to respond and I dropped a very valuable clue to your fix. But you didn’t pick it up.And I am beginning to wonder if you even have your web server and php actually installed and running. And even if you have web pages can’t be served out of the home dir. In Apache they need to be in LAMPP/htdocs/public_html. And one glance of your tilde told anyone all they needed to know about what you were doing.
