• I have a paid account and use this plugin on multiple sites. I’d give 2.5 stars if I could, but have to round down since the cons are significant for me.

    PROS:
    1) choice of compression level: I choose the middle one (“Glossy” since that’s better than lossy).
    2) Pricing is based on number of images optimized/month, NOT the number of sites it’s used on, which is a big bonus in the WP Pro Plugin world. I have a few medium-high traffic/new posts sites, and a bunch of much-lower-traffic sites. Only pay once, and you can choose the number of images compressed each month. And really, since you only (usually) compress once, you don’t use up all that many credits per month unless you have a HUGELY fast-growing site.
    3) You can keep “backups” of the images that have been compressed so if the result is unsatisfactory, you can “re-compress” with a different setting, or restore the original.
    4) It’s very easy (though a bit tedious, if you have many sites) to blow out the backups once you’re satisfied with the results, but caution: it’s all or none; better would be “auto delete after X days” setting.
    5) Support is fairly responsive.

    CONS: 1) Not only does the plugin produce WAY too many admin messages in the WP back end, they are NOT DISMISSABLE despite having an (X) in the corner. This is a HUGE negative in the WP Pro Plugin world, and I get them on every damn site until THEY decide to turn the suckers off …and then another soon starts up — it’s VERY irritating. I also use the SP “Adaptive Images” (CDN image serving) paid, and I’m constantly told with an admin message that I could buy more credits …even though I don’t use anywhere near the bandwidth I already pay for. VERY bad form.
    2) There are noticeable artifacts (banding, esp with fountain fills) even on “glossy” setting, and even with PNGs where compression is “supposed to be” lossless. I’ve also seen occasional but subtle color changes. compresspng/jpg/pdf (dotcom) does a better compression job with no such artifacts, but it’s a PITA manual process to use that suite of ad-supported sites if you’re doing more than a few images/month.

    So all in all I like the one-two punch of the pro/paid versions, and will revisit my rating should they work on the two serious issues.

    I would like to address the two cons you mention.

    1. We would like to know more details about this specific issue. From our side (and can confirm from our clients’ too), when we dismiss a message, it doesn’t come back. If you want, since you have purchased some credits, you can contact us by e-mail and we will be more than glad to take a look at your site.
    2. Noticeable artifacts in Glossy mode are usually a sign of something else over-compressing the images. For example, Jetpack is known to do it. In any case, we are also willing to take a look at your specific images and, if necessary, improve our algorithms. It’s just a matter of contacting us ??
