Twentyfourteen – limit text in post using excerpts

  • Hi
    I hope I have put this new thread in the correct place. I am currently using WP4.2.2 and using Twenty Fourteen theme.

    I am using Orbisius Child Theme Creator to control my child theme but I have an author who doesn’t understand the need to add read more to limit the post on the home page.

    I have google endless places on how to edit the function.php file to limit all posts automatically to 50 words etc but I can’t get anything to work.

    I assume you need to copy the functions.php from the root installation into the child theme and edit this?
    If this is correct what php code will I need to add?

    can anyone help?
