twenty twelve menu, how to make it work on ipad/iphone?

I created a page using Twenty Twelve and I’m trying to view it and navigate the menus using my iPad and they are just impossible to use correctly. In order to click on a drop down I have to open it in a new tab and that only works for the main menu items.

It does seem to work better if I have my iPad in a portrait orientation (held the long way up and down) rather than a landscape view (where the menus don’t really work.)

Sorry I can’t give you my URL because it’s a confidential project but is there a switch or a way to make this work for use on a mobile device?
