• I’m trying WP as a site builder for the first time and using Twenty Twelve. The sample photo of TT shows two columns spanning the width of the page, a primary wide column with a smaller sidebar with lots of widget-type text.

    My home page (front page) has two columns scrunched over to the left giving the appearance of a blank sidebar, and I see no option in the editing section for adding widgets, texts, or anything other than a photo in the second column.

    What am I missing? https://www.expressit4u.com

    Thanks,
    Laurie

  • Re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Twelve folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    Hi heikkenen,

    If you go under the Appearance tab and go to Widgets, you can add widgets to the sidebar column by dragging and dropping to the widget areas from the widgets that are available.

    The Front Page Template widget areas are at the bottom of the page. It doesn’t look like it has a sidebar, which might work if it didn’t leave a quarter of the page blank looking like there should be one. But thank you! Any other ideas?

    I will try uploading a new Twenty Twelve file. Thank you.

    the sample photo does not actually show a page with the ‘front page template’;

    what you see is very much the default layout of the ‘front page template’ with a half-width left column and space for a ‘featured image’ on the right;

    only difference: your image is less wide than the available space.

    the layout is controlled by css based on the body_classes of .template-front-page and .has-post-thumbnail

    you might be better off not using the ‘featured image’ but to insert a right-aligned image into the content of the page.

    Can you use a sidebar template for your home page if that is what you are trying to acheive?

    Hey, folks, everyone, thank you so much. I found a solution. I switched from the Front Page Template (which apparently just doesn’t have a sidebar) to the Default, which allows sidebar widgets. It’s a bit counter-intuitive; you’d think the Front Page Template would look like a home page as displayed by WordPress. I put my photo in my body text, aligned right.

    I’m rocking and rolling now.

    Again many thanks,
    Lsurie
