I installed and ran this plugin on a small batch of photos this week. After optimization, the photos that were used as featured images on my Twenty Fourteen WP theme are no longer the correct size. The theme is responsive so the photos have always automatically been adjusted in the featured image section. Now they show up in a “fit image” manner, so vertical photos that once were expanded to fit width wise (thus showing a zoomed in view of the photo with the top and bottom no longer visible) now show the entire vertical photo with gray hatch marks to the right of the photo. More gray shows than photo. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Or why it happened to begin with? I deleted one of the featured images and re-uploaded it, but I have hundreds of photos that have been affected and hundreds of blogs potentially affected. I’ve Googled the heck out of it and still haven’t found a solution. It has to be a setting somewhere I need to tweak, right?

    Ideas welcome!

If it IS a setting problem (which it kind of sounds like, since EWWW does not resize images by default), then it would be most helpful if you turned on EWWW’s debug option and posted the debug information from the settings page (use pastebin or code tags).

    Hey @nosilver4u!

Thanks so much for your response. I actually uninstalled EWWW because I realized that it wasn’t EWWW that was causing the problem with my featured images showing up in non-responsive sizes. It was actually the deactivation of Jetpack Photon that caused my photos to appear like that. When I reactivated Photon, the photos immediately showed up correctly again. The problem is that I can’t seem to run Photon and EWWW together because that slows down my site considerably. So now I can’t seem to turn off Photon without it mucking things up royally. I’ll pick some down time tonight to deactivate Photon, reinstall EWWW, and run the debug report for it. I’m not entirely sure what that means or how to do it, but I’ll figure it out. ??

If it is an issue with Photon, no need to worry about EWWW’s debug stuff then. I don’t recommend Photon to anyone, and I don’t know that using EWWW along with Photon will do any good. It has some neat functionality, but when I tested it a while back, it was generating un-compressed images, which undoes some of what EWWW has done. Not the end of the world, but pagespeed and other site testing tools will complain about your images not being fully compressed when using Photon (unless they fixed that problem). I tried re-testing it more recently, but was unable to even get it to resize any images, and haven’t had time to muck with it since.

Shoot. Well I don’t suppose you know why deactivating Photon would cause my featured image issue, do you? Or even better, just how to fix the problem so I don’t have to keep Photon active? I understand it’s not your plugin, but I’m wondering if you’ve encountered that problem before…?

I’m afraid I’ve never seen such a thing before, and since I haven’t tried Photon in a while, I don’t have a good grasp on what all it is doing that could “fix” such an issue. Perhaps a request in the Jetpack forums would get some insight?
