Using the twenty eleven template at the moment and I really like it except for all the “wasted” space at the top.

I just want my site logo (graphical or textual) along with the search bar to be just 10-20px down from the top of the page, no more.

I’ve been trying to adjust styles.css for #branding, #site-title, and #site-description and nothing seems to make a difference. Am I adjust the correct style sheet? hmmmmm.

I have a single right hand side bar with a custom menu, although a top menu with dropdowns for sub-pages would be nice. Still investigating that.

    thanks!

    my bad…should have cleared cache.

Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. It is the default WordPress 3.2 theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues. Create a child theme for your changes. Once your child theme is active, we should be able to help with the customisation.

    Thanks for the advice!

I kind of jumped into all of this without RTFM first. But, it all looks marvelous now. Just CSS and a little header.php mod.I can always save off my styles.css and re-install the original.

don’t know how to make a child theme but I’ll follow your link and learn!

Started all over with fresh WP install. Modifying a child theme is much simpler than searching through all the dist code.
