twenty eleven header image height

Folk I know this is an age old topic, but one for which several different solutions are circulating. Each solution seems to have glitches associated to them.

I using the code below. This is one that @digital Raindrops suggested and thought I understood (I am a beginner).

I loaded to my child theme and saved it but nothing happens. I should be able to see the new dimensions (1000x100px) on the dashboard, nothing. I uploaded a 1000x100px image but it gets stretched to the original 1000x288px.
