• Under the discussion settings, there is a box under the section “Other Comment Settings” labeled “Automatically close comments on articles older than”.

    I keep ticking the box so there is NO check mark. I want to have comments enabled for all of my posts.

    However, after a week or so it automatically gets checked and no one can leave a comment.

    I have even tried setting the days to a very high number but it still keeps getting reset to 28 days and the box being checked.

    How do I make it so this box if unchecked at all times?

    Thank you

  • I just realized that I have not had this setting get rest a single time since I contacted Bluehost 7 weeks ago. So either it’s an incredible coincidence, WordPress implemented a fix in an update, or Bluehost fixed something after I talked to them. Interesting… I will report back if it gets reset.

    I just checked our client’s site again – and it got defaulted back to CHECKED and 28 days.. still not fixed…

    It keeps happening to me too. Last time, a reader alerted me to it about a month ago and I just noticed it has closed off comments again today. I’ve added the discussion page link to my bookmarks so I can check it regularly, but that shouldn’t be necessary! WHY can’t WordPress or Bluehost figure it out and fix it? So frustrating!

    I have the exact same issue. I’m currently hosted on Just Host.

    JustHost and Bluehost are sister companies, probably use the same systems.

    My sites haven’t had the problem for a few weeks now.

    But I did get Bluehost to run a malware scan, due to another issue, and since deleting some old plugins, I haven’t seen this issue come back.

    This same issue is happening to me and I’ve read three forum threads on it now. I am having the same exact issue with the 28 days being checked and I have tried all of the same strategies suggested. (disabling all plugins and themes, putting in 999999 days)

    Nothing has helped or worked.

    I am using HostMonster… also, I two websites. Only one is having this problem.

    Very strange. :/

    I’m having the same issue, and I’m on JustHost.

    @breeziikat

    I feel it may be a conflict with another plugin, but haven’t worked out which one yet.

    I seem to get it on 2 of 5 websites, possibly after plugin updates.

    It can go a few months between the issue re-occurring. Back in April they reset 3 times in one week, but then no change until in June, when 2 sites reset again, and no issue since.

    I’m still having this problem, does anyone have any more recent updates?

    Yes, frustratingly enough this is also still happening to me. :/

    All.. don’t troubleshoot with Bluehost on this! They shut down my site and said that it was malware that caused this. Personally I was happier dealing with the frustrating problem than having to pay for all this (since I don’t know how to do it myself).

    My site is gone.. and here is what they said…

    “We have uploaded a file titled ‘malware.txt’ within the user directory of your account which contains the full list of infected files found from the scan. We do have a basic article that talks about site security here: https://my.bluehost.com/hosting/help/511. If you would like further assistance with cleaning your account, we are partnered with Sitelock as a malware solution. They can be reached at (855) 378-6200, or you can contact our support lines at https://helpchat.bluehost.com for chat or by phone at (844) 303-1810 and we can connect you with a Sitelock agent.

    In order to lift the suspension:
    1. The malware has to be cleaned, I recommend utilizing a security company such as SiteLock, if you do decide to clean the malware yourself, be aware, some of the files are needed for the site to operate and if improperly cleaned will cause issues with the site in the future and we won’t be able to help with fixing the site after the suspension is lifted.

    We also highly recommend the following updates as well:
    1. Perform updates to your sites content, and php scripts to ensure they are not outdated. Outdated scripts can and will leave a backdoor for hackers to gain access.
    2. A Captcha is recommended on any, Comments, Login, and Contact form. This helps to mitigate your forms from being abused by any “bad” traffic.”

    Warning: don’t call Bluehost unless you want to lose your site!

    @stfriedman
    If it was malware that causes this, it would be very odd.

    I have six sites that this happens to, normally all at the same time.

    And it seems to only affect bluehost group hosts.

    I have recently been using the setting ‘ON’, but at ‘99,999’ days.
    Every so often it defaults back to 28 days, normally on all my sites, but sometimes one of them escapes the issue.

    I did have another unrelated issue once, and Bluehost blamed malware, like you, but I restored back a few weeks, notified them, and it was all back up again. It didn’t stop the closing comments issue though.
