• Hi everyone. I’ve been having some throttling issues lately with my site and I’m starting to believe that it’s related to my comment section. I checked MySQL and my comment section was about 150MB.

When I login in my WP Admin site, the default WP comment section is always full of junk, pingbacks and trackbacks. The odd thing is, I have Disqus installed and I use that. As far as I can see, when I navigate to Setting > Discussion > I have all related to commenting turned off. However, after I purged the 300,000 comments from MySQL database side, within 5 minutes, I have 35 of these junk comments back.

How can I turn the comments completely off or block this? The again weird part is that none of these comments are also appearing on the site. Any help would be wonderful!

  • Remove the discus plugin should do it if you have comments off, but if any post or page was edited to specifically allow comments, you will have to edit them to turn comments off, which can be done in ‘batch mode’ (we will call it for lack of a better term):

Admin Dashboard>Posts>All Posts>Upper right;Screen Options:Change to a high number of posts viewed, 100, etc.>Click check box at top left next to Title to select all posts in current view/page>Bulk Action:Edit>Apply>Change Comments to not allowed.

Repeat on next page/set of posts and also follow same for pages.

Thank you for your reply Swanson. Here is the issue and I will indeed apply that, I only want Disqus as my commenting, which is exactly what I have. I go in a blog post and only Disqus appears.

However, when I check with WordPress, even though I have the comments and pingback turned off, I get a ton of “junk” incoming links.

So I will indeed apply what you have just mentioned, but I’m not sure if this will address this issue or not.

And here is a tip to stop most comment spam (if you decide to allow comments again):

Admin Dashboard>Settings>Discussion>’Blacklist’ Text Box>Add the following and save:

    http
    www
    ftp
    url

virtually all of my comments that are spam go to the spam area due to this simple setup. I moderate all comments so I catch the rest.

You will need to review the plugin setup options if you continue to use it.

Ahhh yes. And here is the issue with turning off comments with the above method, although Disqus still works, the little bubble that appears on the main page with the comment count, displays “Comments Off” now.

    I’ll try the:

    http
    www
    ftp
    url

Method and see what arises from this.

You can use CSS to hide the bubble
