• I’ve been away from WordPress for two years and I find myself fairly well lost. I have a blog at https://neterm.net/Postcards/

I have a menubar with [Melaque, Mexico] [List of Posts] [Hawaii] and [Sayulita, Mexico]
When you go to my site and click on the Melaque button, it doesn’t show the almost 50 posts which I have written about Melaque, so I need to know how to link my Melaque, Mexico button to those posts.

I also want what is maybe a static menu page which doesn’t show the posts so the reader has to press the Melaque, Mexico button to see them. I want to also put the [List of Posts] button on the new Melaque Mexico page.

Please point me in the right direction. Thanks so much.

  • What I would do is create a category called melaque (go to Posts → Categories), then assign the melaque category to all of your Melaque posts (you can do a bulk edit from the Posts → All Posts list).

Once you’ve assigned the category to all of those posts, then you can create a Category menu item by going to Appearance → Menus. On the left will be a section labeled Categories. If you don’t see such a section, click on the Screen Options tab in the upper right corner and check the box labeled Categories, and that section will appear on the left. Add your melaque category to the menu, dragging & dropping in the appropriate place on the menu. Change the Navigation Label of the menu item to Melaque, Mexico, then save your menu. Now when you click on that menu item, you should get a list of all of your posts for that category, you don’t even have to create a separate page for it.

Thanks CrouchingBruin. I believe I can follow your directions and make this work. Thanks again!

OK. Let me know if you need more explicit details and I can provide them.

@crouchingbruin I hope you are well today and thanks for helping out here in this forum.

Your help here is really appreciated.

    Okay CrochingBruin,
I have created a category called ‘Melaque’ and in Posts have assigned it to all the Melaque Posts, the posts are also assigned the category ‘Mexico’. I then go to Menus in Appearance and see a Page with the Navigation Label of ‘Melaque, Mexico’. In Categories on the left I can checkmark my new ‘Melaque’ category. However, at this point I cannot drag it to anything, it looks like my only choice is to ‘Add To Menu’ which just produces a menubar with all my post titles, it works but I was hoping that the posts would appear under the Melaque, Mexico button in the menubar on my page neterm.net/Postcards.

When I click on the ‘Melaque’ category, the cursor changes to the four arrow shape for dragging but nothing really drags.

Here is a screen shot of what I am looking at:
    wpmenu view

If you click on Add to Menu, the menu item will appear in the right section (Menu Structure). In there, you can drag & drop the menu item where you want it placed. You can’t place it inside of the existing page menu item that you have for Melaque, though. Save the menu, then click the Menu Location tab and make sure you have the menu that you saved selected as the main menu. Clicking on the category menu item should display a page that looks like this.

it looks like my only choice is to ‘Add To Menu’ which just produces a menubar with all my post titles

Your menu bar shouldn’t have all of your post titles in it. Maybe your page titles, but not your post titles.

… but I was hoping that the posts would appear under the Melaque, Mexico button in the menubar on my page neterm.net/Postcards.

Maybe I misunderstood what you are looking for, then. Are you saying that when someone hovers over the Melaque, Mexico menu item, that a submenu would drop down listing all of the Melaque posts? If you have a lot of Melaque posts, then that would be a very large submenu.

Okay, I see what you mean. Now when you press the Melaque, Mexico button, the drop down lists Melaque and if you click on that you are taken to the Melaque posts. If you just press and release the menubar Melaque, Mexico button it takes the reader to an empty page. I will look for a way to turn that part off. I will try the same for my other categories of posts; Hawaii and I will ready the Sayulita menu. Thanks again for your help CrouchingBruin, things are making more sense with the menus and categories than I’ve ever understood.

    A couple more suggestions:

    1. You can replace the existing main menu item for Melaque, Mexico with the category menu item Melaque by dragging it to the same level (instead of indented underneath). You can change the menu text to <strong.Melaque, Mexico by expanding the category menu item and changing the Navigation label field. That way, your visitors can go directly to that index page and you can do away with the main menu item that points to the blank Melaque page. Or
    2. You can create a category menu item for Mexico (since you already have a Mexico category) and move the Melaque and Sayulita category menu items underneath it, since both are in Mexico. That way, your visitors can see all Mexico posts by clicking on the Mexico menu item, or only the Melaque or Sayulita posts by clicking on the appropriate submenu items.

Great ideas CrochingBruin! Now I have two buttonlinks on the menubar, ‘Mexico’ and “Hawaii’. When you click on Mexico you get drop down choice of Melaque or Sayulita, if you choose Melaque, the reader can choose the Melaque posts or the Melaque Post List. Pretty clean and neat, thanks!

If you get a chance to check out my WP at neterm.net/Postcards I’d be open to any suggestions for improvement. I really appreciate the help you have given.

    Hi,

You will need to save updated menu only once

You can create a new page, add all the posts from different categories you want to. add that page(change it’s label to whatever to name you want in navigaion bar) to nav menu and remove the earlier added page.

it won;t even take much. added page to menu(menu not saved), removed page from menu(menu not saved), postioning newly added page in menu(menu not saved), changing label of page if you have to(menu not saved). SAVE MENU!!

    Wish you best luck!!
