Am trying to get some help on this as my posts using a previous forum account kept getting closed immediately.

I upgraded a month ago to 2.8.6 for my site at https://www.hundredmountain.com and was posting fine to it. I opened up both sites two days ago to find that my dashboard is now a mess, looking like a bulleted list running down the page (I can still navigate in it but everything is all text now). And all my plug-ins are turned off or gone with the message ‘You do not appear to have any plugins available at this time.’ My plugin also say they cannot display as they “don’t have valid header.’ The site on the web itself looks fine.

    The only change I made – and it was a couple weeks ago – was to add to the wp-config.php this following, related to the PowerPress podcast plug-in: define(‘POWERPRESS_PLAY_IMAGE’, ‘https://server.com/full/path/to/image.jpg’);

On my plug ins page, the folowing warnings are displaying:
Warning: gzinflate() [function.gzinflate]: data error in /home/content/d/o/u/douglaseye/html/westvirginiaville/wp-includes/http.php on line 1788

Warning: gzuncompress() [function.gzuncompress]: data error in /home/content/d/o/u/douglaseye/html/westvirginiaville/wp-includes/http.php on line 1793

What happened and how do I get back to the dashboard I was using? I can’t uninstall the Powerpres plug-in because it looks like all my plug-ins are gone. I used GoDaddy so should I go there and simply try and reinstall WordPress over the existing 2.8.6 installation? NOTE: The dashboard of another subdomain of my site using WordPress 2.6.2 works fine.

    Help! Douglas

  • Try re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders.

Re-uploading them from where to where? I can either ftp into my site or access my files from GoDaddy. (You’re dealing with a code newborn here). Thanks for the help. Douglas

Download a copy of WordPress 2.8.6 to your machine, unpack the archive and upload the wp-admin & wp-includes folders to your site using FTP.

Did that. Still screwed up. Looks like this:
    https://hundredmountain.com/wordpressdash

What could that mean? Can I try and reupload the entire WordPress install of 2.86?

I note that the screwed up dashboard says that ‘this plug-in requires javascript.’ Could somehow my Mac Powerbook have a messed up javascript function that does not enable the WordPress dashboard to do its thing visually? But then why did all my plugins deactivate and no longer show in the site? Grasping at straws here. My beta web podcast/magazine site is currently dead in the water.

Can I try and reupload the entire WordPress install of 2.86?

Yes. Just don’t overwrite your wp-content folder or your wp-config.php file.

In the download of 2.8.6 I only see a ‘wp-config-sample.php.’ Is that the file I do NOT upload along with the wp-content folder?

Same problem here!! Please, someone help.

Garagecow, the download of 2.8.6 won’t have a wp-config.php in it – but there is one on your server.

Ignore the wp-config-sample.php file from the download if you want. It doesn’t matter if you do or don’t upload that right now – Just don’t touch the existing wp-config.php file and your wp-content folder that are on your server.

Take a backup copy of everything before you start if you’re not confident with FTP.

But does that mean I do NOT upload the wp-content folder in the new download of 2.8.6 then, so it does not overwrite my existing content then? Thanks for your help!

    That’s correct.

Tried all that. No go. Getting following error at the top of the messed up dashboard. Any way to deal with whatever this error means?

Warning: gzinflate() [function.gzinflate]: data error in /home/content/d/o/u/douglaseye/html/westvirginiaville/wp-includes/http.php on line 1788

Warning: gzuncompress() [function.gzuncompress]: data error in /home/content/d/o/u/douglaseye/html/westvirginiaville/wp-includes/http.php on line 1793

In exasperation, am about ready to overwrite the whole site with a new installation of 2.9 and just rebuild everything from scratch. Someone stop me before it’s too late. I hate to be such a code noob.

I think I’ve got this figured out. When I did this upload with 2.9 it fixed my dashboard problem, though I had to uninstall and reinstall askimet and the all-in-one seo plug-ins. Thanks for the help! Back in business.

I have experienced the same problem.

I some cases, when you upgrade WordPress, some existing plugins become part of the WordPress engine. Therefore, they conflicts with your upgrade.

Consider disabling your plugins one by one from your messed-up dashboard until you find the one conflicting with your upgraded WP installation

If you did not upgrade and still experiencing this problem, do the same thing said above. You might no longer need to install a specific plugin to achieve some goals.
