You need to resize the images first. They are being displayed smaller in the page than the actual image dimensions. You can generally create the appropriate sizes with a combination of Simple Image Sizes and Regenerate Thumbnails OR by using and properly configuring the Hammy plugin.

Hi, I have the same problem as the original poster, but do not understand the response. Can you please elaborate? I’d have to manually re-size each of the 227 images I have in my Media Library? Thanks.

The only thing ‘manual’ about my instructions is that you need to look at the html code and see what size the images are actually being displayed at (the width and height attributes).

1.You can adjust the existing resize options in WordPress (WP automatically generates a large, medium, and thumbnail version of every image), or you can add an entirely new resize to the process with the Simple Image Sizes plugin. Once You’ve added all the resizes you need, you can run Regenerate Thumbnails.

    2. OR you can let the Hammy plugin do all of that for you on the fly. But it may need some configuration depending on your theme (mine did not, but not every theme follows the same standards).

Tried Hammy, but re-optimizing with EWWW led to no additional improvements. Very frustrating because my PageSpeed Insights score is a 1/100 for mobile and 12/100 for desktop.

    Should Fix:
    Optimize images
Properly formatting and compressing images can save many bytes of data.
Optimize the following images to reduce their size by 4.4MiB (95% reduction).

I’m leery of using Simple Image Sizes and Regenerate Thumbnails, as I installed them but am afraid of messing something up given I have 200+ images. I’ll keep researching this because image optimization is clearly not my area of expertise.

If you have Hammy properly configured, it generates the appropriate sizes on-the-fly, there is no ‘re-optimization’ to be done. If you can’t get it working right (watch the video that they have available), then your best bet is Simple Image Sizes and Regenerate Thumbnails. Take a backup of your files and database, that way if you break something, you can fix it again.

Is the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin even needed? SIS has its own button to regenerate thumbnails.

If that is the case, then it is likely not necessary. I had not noticed that the last time I tested SIS.

OK I tried SIS and my PageSpeed score is now 3 (instead of 1), with the results again telling me to optimize the images. I give up. I see no other choice but to bulk compress my images offline, replace the current images in WordPress Media Library, and re-add them to each post. It’ll take forever but nothing else seems to work. Thanks.
