Some images in my web story are suddenly very low res in desktop browsers but not mobile. Images appear as expected in the editing panel, and when I first published the story all images were at their correct resolution in mobile and desktop browser.

I checked the story again several weeks later and noticed that the images on the 2nd and 3rd slide are very low res, but only in desktop browsers. I made no changes to the story.

Any hints on figuring out why some images (and not any others) might suddenly become low res?

@ddelicious Thank you for reaching out with your topic. There seems to be a low-resolution copy of the image on the story. Could you confirm that you only uploaded this image once?

The Imagery plugin creates several versions of an image. I did not choose for the lower res copy to be used in the slide. In the editing panel, a higher res version of the image appears.

Does the editing panel show the original image URL? I can’t find a way to see that.

@ddelicious The image URL can be located when you inspect elements in your browser developer tools. The Checklist panel will actually inform you when there is an image with low resolution as well as point out the image.

Could you try temporarily disabling the Imagery plugin and save your story again to check if the low-resolution copy of the image displays?

I deactivated Imagify, then deleted one of the low res images from the story and added it back in. Saved. The image still appears low res. I will ask Imagify if they know why a smaller version of the image is being served

@ddelicious In my testing, it looks like there are optimization options that could result in poorer images and overwrite the already uploaded images. If there was the option to use the backed-up images you could try and recover the originals. I recommend reaching out to their plugin support as well.

    Here is what Imagify said:

Here is the code that is displaying the image you linked to:

I think there is an issue with the responsive code used (which Imagify does not do anything with).

Have you tried viewing the page with your browser opened wide? If I do, it will actually load the higher resolution image (try wider than 1300px):

I know that GWS may be saying it’s due to us, but being that we don’t touch your actual code used to display this image, I have to say I don’t think it is due to Imagify.

Let me know what you think and if I’ve missed anything. I’ll be glad to continue assisting however I can!

    Best regards,
    Joseph

So it looks like an issue with GWS responsive code. Not sure why that would affect some images in the slideshow and not the others.

@ddelicious Thank you for the update. We will definitely investigate this further on our end. Does this issue occur with the latest version installed (1.4.0)?

Not sure why that would affect some images in the slideshow and not the others.

Could you check if this happens when you remove the animations from that image and set it as background only?

I updated to 1.4.0. The problem did not go away.

I made the image in slide 2 the background image with no animations and now a higher res version of the pic appears.

I have the same situation some times in desktop browser. For one example i tried to set a photo for background.

In mobile, i don’t have problems. I used Jetpack plugin (with Photon) and WP Total Cache (but i don’t configurate total cache plugin yet).

The problem appears with a new post, but old posts apparently stop having the problem. I think the Jetpack takes time to set the images in Webp format.
