Trouble With User Accounts/Role

I have a site set up that has some user account settings, and have 2 plugins related to user account creation. However, when a user registers for an account via any of the available or I create an account manually from the dashboard, there are problems. The registration/creation process goes normally, e-mails are sent properly, account is created in the “Users” section, etc. However, all users are automatically assigned to the role “None”, and when I edit the user account to a different account type, it automatically reverts to “None” and does not allow me to make the change.

I tried disabling each one and then both of the plugins related to the user account settings, but got the same result even with both plugins disabled.
