• i’ve downloaded wp to my harddrive f: and unzipped it there. then using filezilla (ftp) i uploaded my files 23 and three folders to wpblog subdir off of public. my host uses a linux and windows server. i configured wp-config.php and uploaded to root of wpblog. when i run install i get the following:
ERROR: %s’), $error); ?>

/>

'.__('Already Installed').'

'.__('You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.').'
');} switch($step) { case 0: case 1: // in case people are directly linking to this display_header(); ?>

(int) $_POST['blog_public'] : 0; // check e-mail address $error = false; if (empty($admin_email)) { // TODO: poka-yoke display_setup_form( __('you must provide an e-mail address.') ); $error = true; } else if (!is_email($admin_email)) { // TODO: poka-yoke display_setup_form( __('that isn’t a valid e-mail address. E-mail addresses look like: [email protected]') ); $error = true; } if ( $error === false ) { $wpdb->show_errors(); $result = wp_install($weblog_title, 'admin', $admin_email, $public); extract($result, EXTR_SKIP); ?>

admin
'. $password .'
'; } echo '

'. $password_message .'
'; ?>

so: what’s my mistake or is it a hosting problem. of course they tell me they don’t support 3rd party software so i get no where with them.
i’ve dropped the db and created a new one. there aren’t any tables in the db.
help!!
thank you for any advice.

• Hi, I’m having the exact same problem! I just followed the 5 minute instructions, and I get the garbled page when I go to <https://localhost:8080/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php>

I set up the mysql database and user manually in mysql 5.1.

I’ve verified that the user exists with a password and all grants for localhost, and that the database exists (with no tables).

Other sites on my localhost are fine.

Any ideas?

PS I’m on OSX 10.5.8

i’ve got a crazy system on my server:
database manager where i have a numbered user and then i can create a db:
i also have another section called phpmyadmin: where i can also create a db i think a mysql db. i’ve used database manager and get a garbled page when i run wp-admin/install.. i’ve given permissions to most files in root of wppress on server and to wpadmin/install. what gives. should i use the mentioned phpmyadmin? my server tech is no help at all. they don’t know their apps on the server.

i have worpress 2.8.5 running well on xampp. i’m not running it now but would it interfere with running wp on my server? is that why i’m having trouble installing it and it says tables created already and delete db??
thanks for looking at this and any help you give.. i’m a real newbie and can’t find documentation on this. i’ve searched wp and can’t find anythng that would help.

Ok– I figured out my issue…

https://warker.com/2006/09/16/wordpress-os-x-install-tips/

On OS X you have to change the database connection to mysql.sock instead of the normal “localhost”. Thank god for that website– it explained everything necessary to set up a local wordpress install on OS X!!!

@ericbarn I think the garbled page happens when php is not configured properly, so the page isn’t executing the php code but instead trying to render it as wonky html.
