Ok so I was having some trouble with the permalinks on my new blog. If you clicked a link to read an individual item the page it’s looking for doesn’t exist, and so it took you back to my main page. The structure for the permalink was “https://domain.us/?p=123” while my wordpress is at “https://domain.us/wordpress”

I tried to change to a custom permalink structure “https://domain.us/wordpress/%postname%/” and in doing so wrecked my site. After I applied, received the “permalink structure updated” message I went to my blog and my sidebar, normally on the right, was on the left and above it a 404 – not found error.

I was able to go back to the default and everything works but I am not sure where to go from here with the troubleshooting. Any thoughts?

Do you have the correct URLs set in the Options->General section of your blog?

(If it’s giving you the wrong permalinks like you describe, then the answer to that question, BTW, is no.)

In the options -> general sections I have the url for wordpress as “https://domain.us/wordpress” and the url for the blog as just “https://domain.us” as I have an entrance screen configured for the blog. Is that incorrect?

Apparently you were absolutely correct. Once I went and changed the url of the blog to “https://domain.us/wordpress” I could change the permalink structure to whatever I wanted with out problem.

    Thanks for the help.

Right. If you setup WordPress all in one directory, with nothing special, then both those URL’s will always be the same. If you setup the main root of WordPress in a different directory from the rest of WordPress, *then* they’ll be different.
