• I just changed my website from disputationstation.com to apologeticsnow.com. The WordPress blog I was using at disputationstation had posts that were very important to me and my family, and I tried for several days to figure out the programmer-speak on the WordPress site to back up the files, but to no avail. Strangely, there is no phone number for tech support, and my hosting company–despite the fact that they do business with WordPress–has no idea how to get ahold of these people. I would much prefer to speak to someone, as programmers are notoriously NOT technical writers, but if someone can answer my two questions I’ll be happy: (1) how do I now retrieve the stuff from the old blog and transfer it to the new one? and (2) the WordPress login page does not recognize me. How do I reset this situation so that I can use this blog that came with my $95 investment?

    Thanks,

    Michael

Your $95 investment did not go to WordPress, by the way… WordPress is open source, free software. There is no one to call, because these forums are your support venue, and they’re run completely by volunteers. You have not paid for any software, please keep that in mind. Whatever money you spent has gone directly to your hosting company or to whoever may have “sold” you the software (which they aren’t allowed to do, from what I gather).

https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/phpmyadmin/ this should help you to reset your password, so that you can log in properly.

I addition to what lady said, the Codex (WP’s online maual) also has articles about moving:

[and let’s not go into what one can do with an open source software – has been discussed zillion times, read the GPL:

Figured out how to change password. Now I’m going to check out the link for moving files. Thank you for your prompt reply.

Okay, I confess I have no idea what any of that meant. Furthermore, I no longer have the luxury of simply transferring files. I have been trying to do that for days, but now disputationstation.com has been cancelled. Somewhere, WordPress has a backup of these files. Getting there is proving tricky.

I am not a programmer, so phpMyAdmin and other such semantic intricacies are like third-year Greek to me.

if the site’s been cancelled, and you never MADE the backup, then there is none, and since you say you can no longer transfer files because it’s been cancelled, i’d venture to guess everything’s gone. maybe talk to the hosting company, and see if they can help you with that – but if you can’t get in there, there’s no way for you to get at your database (that might not even exist anymore)

There is nothing in your files.
All your content (posts, Pages, comments, settings etc.) is stored in the database, so saving the files doesn’t help.
You need a backup of the database – either done by you (via phpMyadmin or using a plugin) or (if you are lucky) done by your host.

Just a couple of things to get straight:

    1. I have been trying for days to back up these files; it didn’t just now dawn on me that I needed to do that.

    2. Let’s assume that I am a terrorist or criminal of some sort, and I post something that the Homeland Security people would take an interest in. Are you telling me that, once I cancel the domain, the Dept of Homeland Security has no access to the files? That WordPress doesn’t have a backup somewhere that they could produce if a person knew how to ask right?

WordPress, the “company”, does not have anything. (It’s actually software provided by a company called AutoMattic – https://www.automattic.com) WordPress is software for you to install and use on your own domain on your own server (hosted by yourself or a company you paid to host)

“Are you telling me that, once I cancel the domain, the Dept of Homeland Security has no access to the files? That WordPress doesn’t have a backup somewhere that they could produce if a person knew how to ask right?”

I have no idea what DHS can access – I’m sure the government can find things normal people can’t… but I’m not a gov’t employee, and that’s another topic all together.

But yes, WordPress (or the company that created it) does not have any information on you, your site, or any such thing. It’s just software – like you’d buy a game for your PC at Wal-Mart, only this software is free. The only possibility is to see if your hosting company has a backup of your database used on the old site. It’s highly unlikely, of course, but it can’t hurt to ask.

Edited to add: I just went to archive.org and checked your old site, to see if there was any cache of the old site (in terms of seeing your old content the way it’d be seen if it were still an active site) and there’s nothing: https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.disputationstation.com

    Google’s cached this page: https://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:hWX0vT7qjwoJ:www.disputationstation.com/main.html+site:https://www.disputationstation.com&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2
but that’s it, and that too will fall to the wayside soon enough.
