Trouble uploading Misty Look theme

You’ll need to contact your theme’s vendors.

I e/mailed them with no response.

I used that theme years ago. We don’t support themes like that here but a real quick exception once in a while isn’t a bad thing. ??

That is utterly bizarre the style.css file from their download page is missing the useful bits.

Try extracting that theme into wp-content/themes/mistylook.

Then make a copy of that style.css file and add these lines to the very top of that file.

*/

See if the theme activates after that.

Also: just wondering…why do you not support themes like Misty Look?
I am pretty new to this.

It’s for a variety of reasons that we don’t support software outside of the WordPress repository here. I just happened to have used that theme years ago which is why I chimed in.

1. The first reason is that there are commercial theme/plugin developers who provide GPL code and make their living off of the support of that code. All of us want that kind of developer to be wildly successful and we do not want to deprive them of any income.

   This also covers themes that are downloadable for free. It’s still a commercial product even when the provider lets you download it without paying for it.

2. The another reason is that there are developers who provide software but attempt to restrict the use of that software by crippling it so that if you modify something (delete a spammy link for example) then the software disables itself.

   Those should be avoided like the plague and any support requests for those get ignored. If you download a theme like that you’re best bet is to delete it and switch to a supported theme.

3. The last reason (there are probably more but it’s early in the morning for me) is that there are many scammers on the Internet (I know, who knew?) that take someone else’s code and insert malware into it. They then promote their site on the Internet so that unsuspecting people download and install that hacked code.

   That’s how some WordPress installations get compromised: someone tries out the 5 Finger Discount? on a commercial theme and end up with a compromised WordPress installation.

   Chip Bennett wrote an often quoted post on that, give it a read and I think you’ll begin to understand more. ??

   If in doubt for where a commercial theme comes from give the list here a look. There are many good GPL software providers on that list.

Sure you can. You just extract the whole zip file, edit that file, and then upload the whole directory to your WordPress installation’s wp-content/themes directory.

Use FTP or whatever file management method your host provides to get that onto your system.
