    Hi there,

I just switched to a new web host where I am sharing my hosting account with a couple of other blogs I have. Prior to the name server change, I had already uploaded the files from my blog that was on the old host and assumed that once the name server change went through all would be well.

Not so. For some reason, when I put the URL in my browser, I was getting a database error.

So I created a new database and edited the wp-config.php file (which I had moved from my old hosting) to point to the new database I had created.

When I tried plugging the URL into my browser again, this time I was told I needed to install Word Press, which didn’t make sense to me since I had moved over Word Press with my files from the old host.

So I thought, “Okay, maybe this is what I need to do to bring up Word Press on my new host.”

Big mistake. Now all my posts and everything seem to be gone. They’re still on my new host, of course, but they’re not being pulled up when I put my URL in the browser.

    How do I fix this?

    Please help!

    Hi Jeremy:

Thank you for the info. I have a couple of questions.

Part B – Restoring Your Old Blog

    1. On the original server, delete your OLD blog’s database (remember, you should have a copy on your local computer that you made at the very beginning).

    Me:

Is the wp-config.php file the database? If not, what’s the usual name of the database file?

    2. Upload your OLD blog’s installation folder to your original server, overwriting the files that are currently there (you may also delete the installation folder on the server and simply re-upload the OLD blog’s files).

    Me:

I have already switched web hosts and can’t upload to the original server. Not sure what this means.

Also not sure which files are the installation files.

Thank you for your help, Jeremy.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

If you’ve already gotten everything switched over to the new host don’t worry about doing anything to the original host. That’s is for people who want to leave another copy of the blog up at a different name. The wp-config.php file is in the root wordpress directory. Your installation files are your wordpress directory, and everything in it.
