Trouble linking word-press site to purchased domain

Hello All!
I am currently attempting to set my WordPress site’s primary domain to example.com from its WordPress placeholder, example.wordpress.com
The domain was purchased back on the 3rd of December, and I just published the site today, and changed the primary domain to example.com
Despite this, a 404 error occurs whenever anyone visits the new (or old) domain. I’ve watched some tutorials, but can’t seem to discern what went wrong. If anyone has suggestions as to what steps I could take to rectify the issue, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!
