• I just bought a domain and hosting with a database. I downloaded wordpress and copied the files across using the FTP. I went to my domain.co.uk/wp-admin/install.php and input my database info but I get the ‘error establishing a database connection’ message.

I noticed before that is says I could try opening the wp-config-sample and renaming it as wp-config.php once I add my database info. I did this and uploaded it to the same folder on the FTP as the wp-config-sample.
When I then went back to the /wp-admin/install.php address at first it said that it found the file and asked to install it but it didn’t work (with the same error message as before). Now if I go to wp-admin/ or wp-admin/install.php I’m taken straight to the ‘Error establishing connection to the database’ message. I can’t find where it has put the wp-config file either, I can’t see it anywhere in my FTP?!

Can anyone help me out here?

    Thanks!

No – you need to name the new file as wp-config.php and upload it to the root folder of your domain.

I think it is the root folder. I’m following a guide provided by my host and I have moved the WordPress files to the /www folder

Are they inside a folder called wordpress?

No, the guide says to upload the wordpress files directly to the /www folder as this is the main folder.

    I’m following this guide…

point 5 is the bit I’m on.

Do you have a wp-config.php file in your root domain folder?

the only folder I have on my ftp is the www folder. The guide says to put all the WordPress files in the www folder

Just noticed the wp-config.php file on my FTP (root folder that is the www folder) and deleted it and I’m getting the usual database info entry when I go to domain.co.uk/wp-admin/install.php and I’m 100% entering my correct information but it is still giving me an error establishing a connection message.

I can see on my host control panel (not cpanel) that the database is set up. I was emailed all the login details once it was done but don’t know why it won’t establish a connection.

Double check the database details with your hosts.

Frustratingly it just suddenly worked. Quite a long time for it to start working if that was the problem but thank you for your help none the less.
