“triggering” is_archive

You can use the page management feature to create a separate archives page. Take the template you are using to create that page and add this header:

Next, go to Write->Write Page. Select “Archives” from the “Page Template:” dropdown. Press “Create New Page”. You can get to the new page via index.php?pagename=archives.
