  • Hey there lyamcarter,

    Thanks so much for submitting translations. I am not a translator but I have been doing the best I can to learn how to make our codebase as internationally friendly as possible.

    As for your request, I have no idea if there’s a way for us to simplify this. There are, at any given time, two codebases (the stable and the development) and while the strings might be the same I don’t know how we can change this translation process. Do you know of another plugin who has a different or simpler process? Is there something we can do as developers to prevent this from happening while still maintaining the two versions of the codebase?

    If there is, please let me know but, as I am not actually a translator, I am not aware of any processes that we can change to make it easier. And, for what it’s worth, I have spent a LOT of time working with translators and researching WordPress translation so that we can do things as well as possibly can.

    I appreciate your input and insight,

    Good Day!
    Could you tell me if I add a lines to the .pot file, they will be lost when upgrading the plugin?

    @ksdenis,

    Yes.

    Any changes made to any files inside the “lifterlms” directory in your plugin folder will be lost during plugin upgrades.

    Secondly, the .pot file is automatically regenerated every time a LifterLMS update is released. It’s part of our build and release process. The .pot file is generated using a library the scans the entire plugin for any translation functions and builds the .pot file as a result.

    In short, I’m not sure what you’d achieve by adjusting only the .pot file. The only thing I could think of is that LifterLMS is missing a translation function somewhere, in which case you’d also need to modify other parts of the codebase in addition to the .pot file.

    I think you might be looking to adjust the .po and .mo files. In which case you’ll want to move files out of the LifterLMS core and add them as per our documentation here: https://lifterlms.com/docs/how-to-load-lifterlms-translation-files-or-language-packs/

    If there’s *specific* issues with either .po/.mo files or if the .pot file included in LifterLMS please let us know and we’ll address accordingly. LifterLMS has no actual translators on our team. We rely on community support and we’re encouraging translators to submit translations to GlotPress so that we can *remove* translation packs from our plugin and help increase the quality of the plugin for the international community.

    If you have any further questions or if you have SPECIFIC issues with strings that you can’t translate please let us know. Very general feedback like “make this better” really isn’t helpful as I noted above.

    Take care,

    Thank you for this instruction! Its very helpfull.
    The reason why I want to edit a .pot file – is missing a some strings for translation (as you have correctly noticed) for Quiz Page.
    Here’s how it looks: https://gyazo.com/be20c5a35e1fcc60608328af6c6fcbf9

    Because of this it is impossible to fully translated into Russian.
    I should add the missing strings in my .po file?

    Strings are not translatable unless the codebase says they’re translatable. This is what I mean when I say “If we’re missing translatable strings, let us know”!

    Thanks for the heads up, I’ve added these items to our backlog and I’ll make sure they’re made translatable in a future release. I’ll leave this thread open until we’ve had a chance to update and the release is available so we’ll ensure we follow up with you.

    We’ll keep you posted and take care,

    Thanks!
    Here’s another 2 non-translatable strings on Quiz page:

    Also, in quiz results page “show summary” first appears translated, but if you click on it, it changes to “hide summary” in English, and then clicking on “hide summary” turns into “show summary” in English, even though the rest of the page is translated, except for what ksdenis has already mentioned.

    @irakly and @ksdenis,

    LifterLMS 2.7.3 has just been released and the updated .pot file includes the strings you’ve identified as untranslatable.

    Please let me know if you find anything further.

    Thank you and take care,

    Yes, most of the lines are now translatable except for “quiz results”, passed/failed and the issue I described above with language switching on show summary/hide summary scenario.

    @irakly,

    These issues actually are now translatable are you sure you’re working off the most recent version?

    I implemented a new feature which allows us to translate Javascript and perhaps you’re working off a cached version of the Javascript files so not receiving the updated translations.

    Take care,

    Yes, I have the latest version, updated yesterday. To test I used built-in backend language switcher, the one that translates everything translatable. Would you like to see screenshots?

    @irakly,

    Have you updated your language files? We’ve merely added the ability to translate these strings, you, as the translator, need to actually translate them.

    You can provide the .po/.mo files you’re using and I can help debug those.

    Take care,

    Yes of course. I did search on every phrase that was not translated. I’ll send you .po and .mo files, just in case. Thanks!
