• Hello everyone,

I’m trying to do something that is allegedly really straightforward, but I’ve hit a brick wall and have no choice but to give up and ask for help!

I’ve created a website (let’s call it Website1) in WordPress and want to transfer it to a currently established site (Website2) which has just a front page (not built in WordPress). So following a guide I’ve made an exact backup of Website1 and Website2 on my desktop, then made a backup of the database from Website1 using the hosting site’s phpMyAdmin section. Logged into Website2’s hosting site and created a new database for it. Amended the wp-config.php file with Website2’s DB_NAME, DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD. Then I’ve imported the database from Website1 to Website2 and used FileZilla to copy Website1’s files into Website2’s location.

I’ve then removed Website2’s old files (which just had a front page) and when I go into Website2 all I get is a 404 error. This is the first time I’ve done this and having followed the guide to the letter and being able to see that Website2 is exactly the same (file-wise) as Website1 I have no idea why I’m getting this error. Maybe this is something really obvious but not being an expert I have no idea what to do.

I’ve deleted and redone this about half a dozen times now and need help!

  • I think you need to review Moving_WordPress again and ensure that you followed all of the steps.

Thanks, this is a different guide to the one I was using.

Having gone through it I think I’m making progress but now all but the home page give me 404 errors. I can’t get access to the wp-admin page either.

Actually, having cleared my browser I now get 404 for everything, just like before. Now website1 has the home page fine but all others link to the broken website2.
