Transferring my Website to another domain (same hosting)

    I have created a Website on a free domain that 1and1.co.uk have given me “s602…websitehome…co.uk”. I am now ready to make this Website live on my main Website.

    I have 2 contracts with 1and1.co.uk, the current domain I want to have this on is on a Microsoft server running a static HTML/CSS (not wordpress) currently. The New WordPress site is on a Linux server.

    What is the best way to make the new website live on that domain? I’m guessing I need to transfer the domain onto the Linux server contract, and then is it easiest to just make a fresh wordpress install on there and transfer the website over using Updraft or Duplicator? Or can I literally just point the domain so instead of https://www.s60…co.uk it shows up as the the proper domain? However I’m thinking with this a load of the links that I’ve used throughout the site/images etc will have the wrong links in.

    Thanks for any help! Please ask me to explain in more detail as not sure if any of that actually makes sense!

  • I would suggest transferring the domain over the Linux server. Once that has completed (which can take up to 72 hours to fully propagate), you will need to review Moving_WordPress to get you current WP site working under the new domain name.

    Thanks Esmi, turns out it was a lot easier than I thought. Transferred the domain over like you said, and did a fresh wordpress install & used the updraft pro plugin to transfer everything over! :):):)
