• I have installed a blog in a sub-domain of my own website. However, the blog is for someone else and will be used to replace their existing website. Could anyone tell me what is involved in this process? Is it easy to transfer the WP directory and MySQL database to a new URL and server? And, really importantly, what about internal links, will they all need to be changed manually?

Many many thanks for any help on this – it’s quite an anxious situation!

  • If you can do an export of the database to produce a .sql file then you should be able to import this into the new web addresses database. This will import all your posts and comments, users etc.

In terms of internal links what I did before the import of the SQL file was to open the file in a text editor. Then I searched for all entries of my blogs address e.g. https://www.yourdomain.com/old and then used find and replace to replace them with the address of the new blog e.g. https://www.yourdomain.com/new so all the links were then correct in the new database.

Also make sure that you copy over your wp-content/uploads folder assuming that is were you have uploaded files to, then you get them in the right place too.
