• hey guys! hope you’re all having a fantastic evening.

first of all, let me start by saying i am 100% new to this, so i might be a little slow when it comes to understanding all the bits and pieces.

i recently bought my domain name through wordpress. i had one of those redbackpackdiaries.wordpress.com sites and i paid the $18/year to get it to redbackpackdiaries.com

i was speaking to some friends who told me it’s much better if my domain is hosted elsewhere and not on the actual wordpress site, and seeing as they’re much more advanced in managing their sites i believe them. this is where i need your help!!!

say i wanna transfer it to bluehost (sidenote: good idea? are there any better ones?). when i’m setting up the account it asks me if i have a domain name already. yeah, i do. if i type the domain name i just bought and link it to my bh account, where does that leave me? do i still have to pay the $18/yr on wordpress PLUS the yearly bh fee? does it automatically “cancel” out my payment to wordpress?

also, by transferring my domain to a different host…does it give me more freedom when it comes to customizing my site? i hate that the wordpress wont let you change it up, and i don’t wanna put more money into a premium plan if i’ll be moving elsewhere.

this is probably all really basic stuff, but i’m so confused i honestly have no clue what’s going on right now.

    thanks a bunch!!

  • Hi,

So you just bought the domain which means you if you are looking for external hosting you will need to get a server which is has WordPress hosting. Bluehost does provide that and you will have to check out their monthly/annual plans. There are others in the space too. Like HostGator for example that provide such shared and dedicated hosting. Whatever server you buy, this server rent will be over the $18/year you have paid for domain. This will be hosting fees which will be separate than domain fees.

I don’t believe you will get your $18 back as you have already bought that domain now.

You can customise your site on WordPress.com also. You can install themes on WordPress.com too. Why do you think that it is not possible? In my opinion it is very much possible.

    Hope that helps.
