Site Stats tracking too many page views unlike 1 week before

@jeremy: The xmlrpc file is in another folder for organization and security reasons. I will exclude it as well as https://stats.wordpress.com/e-201329.js and see what happens too

Hmmm, looks like I had already excluded the xmlrpc file in Google page speed sometime ago. I’ll add the javascript file to that as well and see how things go.

hhhmmmm… it doesn’t bode well… I have had about 120 visitors since I started monitoring, but the number of pageviews stands at about 400, when they should be about 260 (give or take).
In the same time interval Analytics has registered a number of pageviews of about 280 which is way more realistic.

Alas, not, it hasn’t worked. I still see about 2.7 – 2.9 views per visitor instead of about 2.2.

No word yet from Google either.

Small update…
Looking at my jetpack stats from mobile (why has the link gone from the stats I see on my computer? VERY annoying indeed as I don’t know how to get them) I have discovered that all the “extra” visits come from the US. I know this because the numbers more or less tally… I used to get something like 20 visits a day from there and now I get 1300… OK, my blog is compelling, but not that much (and it’s not in English either ?? ).

I wonder if there is a way to find out the IP addresses of the “fake” visitor/s to see who they actually are.

Google’s silence is deafening… I fear they are not really interested.

Although you both added stats.wordpress.com to the list of list of URLs served without any optimizations, it still appears to be prefetched by Google PageSpeed. You can see it by checking your site’s source code.

Is there another way for you to exclude libraries from Google PageSpeed?

I’m not sure I understand the issue here. You should be able to access your stats by going to Jetpack > Site Stats in your dashboard.

In order:

1) Looking at my source page the only time I find stats.wordpress.com is here:

Does it mean that is being “optimized” by Google? If it is I wonder whether I should enter that very address in my blacklist instead of
https://stats.wordpress.com/e-201329.js
In case the relevant address changes over time or from page to page, I can use wildcards to get them all.
I am just trying to get as much info as I can so that I can write to Google AGAIN…

In addition to the standard call to the Stats tracking library, you will also notice the following in the site’s head:

<link rel="dns-prefetch" href="//stats.wordpress.com">

I believe that’s what could be causing the problem here.

There used to be a link from the “normal” stats (the ones you see on a computer) to the enhanced ones, but that’s gone and I don’t know how to get to them from my computer.

You can access these stats by clicking on “My Stats“, on WordPress.com home page. If you have connected more than one site to your WordPress.com account, you will be able to switch between all these sites thanks to the dropdown at the top of the page.

I would guess that these visits are coming from Google servers in the US when they hit your site to refresh the cache. I have asked our Stats experts to have a closer look at the issue, and see if we could detect and exclude these fake visits.

We’re working on it. ?? We’re continuously porting new features from WordPress.com over to Jetpack, but we haven’t added all the new Stats modules yet.

We’ve actually been exchanging emails with the Google PageSpeed team, in order to understand the problem. I’ll let you know as soon as we find a solution!
