• Hi

I have been having trouble with sending out trackbacks and pingbacks from sites I ahve hosted on heart Internet in the UK. After trying everything I could, scouring the web and these forums, I have not been able to solve the problem. I raised a ticket with Heart, and eventually, this is their response:

Our servers will allow for Trackbacks/Pingbacks to be received on your blog posts but it appears you cannot send them to other peoples blog posts.

One thing that can cause problems is that our servers block http loopback requests. I am not exactly sure how the WordPress Trackbacks/Pingbacks system works but if it needs to make HTTP requests back to itself on the same server it will not work.

All I can suggest is for you to check the WordPress forums if there are any work arounds available as we do have a lot of users that use wordpress on their accounts. If they have any specific questions about our server setup I would be happy to answer them here for you. For instance, they ask you the questions about our servers, which if you forward to us we’ll be happy to answer.

Anyone able to give me a steer on this?

    Thanks

I know you didn’t want to hear this, but here’s your problem:

Our servers will allow for Trackbacks/Pingbacks to be received on your blog posts but it appears you cannot send them to other peoples blog posts.

So, they admit that their servers have a problem that breaks a popular feature in a very (if not the most) popular blogging platform. What makes matter worse, and leads me to add Heart to my hosting “blacklist,” is their response to the issue:

All I can suggest is for you to check the WordPress forums if there are any work arounds available as we do have a lot of users that use wordpress on their accounts.

So, not only do they admit that their servers have a problem that breaks a popular feature in a very (if not the most) popular blogging platform, but they also mention that they “have a lot of users that use WordPress,” and all they can suggest is that you find a work around?

I think it’s time to find a new hosting provider. One that doesn’t disable basic features and one that actually supports its customers.

If you need more proof, here’s a post from a former Heart customer about the same issue:

    https://sprayfly.com/2008/02/21/heart-internet-web-hosting-wordpress-trackbacks-and-pingbacks-not-supported/

(To further damage their reputation, that post was published over two years ago, and Heart still doesn’t support trackbacks and pingbacks via WordPress.)
