• So WP supports “track-back” and ping-back (?) which sounds really groovy but, um… I have no idea what these features are!
Does anyone have a link that’ll bring me up to speed on blogging lingo?

  • This may help.

From what I know about pinging, if you ‘ping’ another site, you are telling it that you have updated your site. Yesterday for instance, I checked my tracking stats, and found that for some reason, my page is listed on a german listing of blogs. Hovering the mouse over a link will tell you when that site was last updated, and if you are looking for recent content, then having such a feature helps you to avoid pages that haven’t been updated in a long time.
Some ‘blogrolls’ maintain a list of blogs that were updated in say, the last 15 minutes, so if you ping them, you may get extra traffic to your page.
    I think that’s fairly close ??

Podz, that’s perfect! Just what I was looking for. Thanks a bunch!

PingBack is a special form of pinging that bears more resemblance to TrackBack than to pinging weblogs.com:

OK, from now on I promise to check the Wiki before bothering busy people with questions, but thanks for point out that page, WillM. Very much appreciated!

Is there any real reason to TrackBack when you can PingBack? It would appear not.

Even though in practice they are getting closer all the time, in the original design a Trackback ping said “I wrote something about your post that I think your readers would like to see, here’s an excerpt from it to tease them in”, while a Pingback ping said “I linked to you.”
If all blogware writers were reasonable and supported both, your linkdump posts that are just two dozen links without commentary would Pingback, and your thoughtful explanation of why someone’s crazy as a loon would Trackback (and would send a hand-written excerpt, not a cut off in midsentence excerpt of a few words of throat-clearing). But since b2’s children and a few individuals support both, a few individuals support only Pingback, and MT supports only Trackback, you end up needing both to have a chance of getting something through.
