• Without a doubt the WORST plugin I have ever used. Has never functioned properly since day one. I wouldn’t even know where to begin, and it would take multiple paragraphs to detail all of the problems I have encountered.

Out of about 40 or 50 attempts to back up my website, it has only created a full and proper backup a small handful of times. I have about 30 backups that are partial. It appears to only store a small number of backups, after that it deletes your other backups.

It always freezes whenever I attempt to create a backup. Come to find out this is a very common problem that people experience with this plugin. Support said to change by backup type to “System Zip”, which worked for one backup, but now it’s back to freezing again and will not create a backup, and whenever I try it creates a partial file.

I had auto-updates enabled for my plugins (recommended by WordPress), and before an update Total Upkeep attempts to create a backup. Hence, the 30 or 40 incomplete backups created.

On top of all this, my first and ORIGINAL backup of my website was deleted, which I wanted and needed to keep for obvious reasons.

This is the ONLY plugin I have that does not work or function properly. All of my other plugins function flawlessly.

Total Upkeep has become the horror of my life. I can’t update any of my plugins (for example payment gateways and e-commerce) and have had to disable auto-updates for all of my plugins. My website is for my small business, and this plugin has seriously impacted my ability to conduct business.

This plugin is so horrible I have gone out of my way to leave this review. Will look for a proper backup plugin that works like its supposed to.

    Hello @augustbindery

Thanks so much for the feedback, I’m truly sorry to hear about the impact these issues have had on your ability to continue to do business.

We value all feedback, positive or negative, so that we can understand how to provide the best WordPress backup experience possible, so I’d like to thank you very much for the details you’ve provided here that we can use to improve the plugin.

After all of the trouble you’ve had, I wouldn’t blame you if you choose to use another backup solution, but I would like to try to help with some of the difficulties you’re having.

It appears to only store a small number of backups, after that it deletes your other backups […] my first and ORIGINAL backup of my website was deleted, which I wanted and needed to keep for obvious reasons.

You’re right, by default Total Upkeep is set to only keep the 5 most recent backups of your website. The motivation for this is to prevent the plugin from taking up too much of your disk space, and to avoid the restrictions many web hosts place on backup storage.

However, you can change the number of backups you want to keep, as well as protect important backup archives from being deleted. You can find instructions on how to do both in this tutorial.

It always freezes whenever I attempt to create a backup. Come to find out this is a very common problem that people experience with this plugin.

You’re right that these issues are too common. Most of the time, this is due to exceeding some limitation of your hosting account, like Memory Limit, Execution Time, CPU Usage, or Disk Input/Output.

The plugin features several ways to try to reduce the resource usage, including as you mentioned using System Zip instead of the default PHP pcl_zip library, changing the compression level to avoid CPU usage, and excluding large directories (like /wp-content/uploads) to avoid exceeding Disk I/O. Our developers are actively working on creating ways to make this easier for you, and we expect version 2.0 to be released soon with these enhancements.

I had auto-updates enabled for my plugins (recommended by WordPress), and before an update Total Upkeep attempts to create a backup […] I can’t update any of my plugins […] and have had to disable auto-updates for all of my plugins.

You can disable the feature to automatically create a backup before updates. Navigate to Total Upkeep > Settings > Auto Updates and change the setting for Auto Backup Before Update to Disabled.

Again, I’m truly sorry to hear that your experience has been so poor, and especially that it’s impacted your ability to succeed conduction your online business. If we can be of any assistance, please let us know. We’re happy to help here in the WordPress forums, on our dedicated Support Forums at boldgrid.com.
