Topic Order – alphabetical sort not working

    Hi,

    I’ve installed the bbPress Style Pack and in general it’s great, very impressed!
    Various options are enabled and have updated the forum – success.

    However, when I try to sort the topics alphabetically nothing happens on the forum.
    I’m using the setting: Topic Order > 1. Change default order > Tick (activate) > Display Order: Title

    The other option also doesn’t work: Topic Order > 2. Change order in specific forums.

    Any ideas? I’m using Divi theme on a self-hosted wordpress installation.

    have you also clicked Change Default Order activate ?

    sorry just seen that you have done that – sorry reading too fast !

    it could be a theme or plugin issue

    Themes

    As a test switch to a default theme such as twentyfifteen, and see if this fixes.

    Plugins

    If that doesn’t work, also deactivate all plugins apart from bbpress and see if this fixes. if it does, re-enable one at a time to see which is causing the error.

    If you cannot do this to your site (say because it is live) then use the ‘troubleshooting’ features of this plugin to let you test without affecting other users

    Hi Robin,

    Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.

    Ok so I disabled all plugins, and also removed the small amount of custom CSS on the site (Appearance > Customise > Additional CSS). Then I re-enabled just bbPress, then bbp Style Pack, leaving everything else disabled. Unfortunately still the same issue – topics are sorted by ‘last post’ date no matter which sort option is selected in bbp style pack.

    Plugin Information
    WP version: 5.5.1
    Theme: Divi 4.6.6
    PHP version: 7.3.22-1+0~20200909.67+debian9~1.gbpdd7b72
    bbPress version: 2.6.5

    I would post the plugin information Variables but there’s loads of text in there and it might overwhelm this post, should I email it to you?

    Any other ideas?

    do you have a caching/optimiser plugin or hosting service ?

    Hi Robin,

    There was a caching service on the web host (Cloudways) – I’ve excluded all forum pages from caching.
    I’ve also tried changing the theme to TwentyFifteen and TwentyTwenty.

    Still no change I’m afraid, the sort order isn’t alphabetical yet.

    I’ve deactivated all plugins other than bbPress and bbPress Style Pack. I’ll go through and see which options work and which don’t to see if this helps zero in on the problem area…

    Things that do work:
    – Forums Index Styling > 6. > normal/bold – yes, changes forum font weight
    – Forums Index Styling > 6. > font size – yes, changes forum font size
    – Forum Display > 8. > Rounded corners – yes, works
    – Forum Display > 9. Remove Forum/Topic Description – yes
    – Topics Index Styling > 1. Pagination font > size – yes, smaller font
    – Topics Index Styling > 2. Voice font > size – yes, smaller font
    – Topics Index Styling > 3. Topic Title Links > colour – yes, smaller font
    – Topics Index Styling > 14. Topic Lock icon > tick – yes, icon appears
    – Topic/Reply Display > 6. Text Font – yes
    – Topic/Reply Display > 10. Header size – yes

    Things that don’t work / don’t make a difference:
    – Breadcrumbs > 1. Home > Click to show home icon – no, stays as ‘home’ text.
    – Buttons > 1,2 and 3 – no buttons appear
    – Topic Previews > 1. Activate previews – no, doesn’t appear
    – Topic Order > 1. Change default order – doesn’t implement
    – Topic Order > 2. Change specific forums – no
    – There is a caching service on the web host (Cloudways) – I’ve excluded all forum pages from caching – no impact
    – Changing the theme to TwentyFifteen and TwentyTwenty – no impact
    – Reset Settings > Topic Order – save, then reapply topic sort – no change.

    Anything else I should try?

    ok, something is affecting, but it works on my test site, so not sure what to suggest next.

    I took a copy of /wp-content/plugins/bbpress/templates/default/bbpress/loop-topics.php and modified it according to this post (except using ‘orderby’ => ‘title’, and adding the missing ‘}’):

    Then created a new folder /wp-content/themes/Divi/bbpress/ and uploaded the loop-topics.php file into there.

    This worked – the topics are in alphabetical order.

    This gets me going, but I wonder why it’s not implementing with the plugin?

    Ok no problem Robin, thanks for replying so quickly. And (this minor issue aside) the plugin works great and saves a lot of hassle, great work!
