• I use BackWPup on most sites I manage. I just installed the current version in a newly created WordPress installation, and after setting up a job, which ran successfully, I discovered the icon on the top bar for the menu that I usually use to access logs, jobs, and backup files is missing.

I couldn’t find any setting to display it, and as far as I can tell from the plugin changelogs, it should display by default. Is there a setting to turn it on? If not, what could be interfering with it displaying?

    Hi,

    Thank you for reaching out.

It is available on my test site on latest version: https://shottr.cc/s/1KyR/SCR-20241213-k2cp.png. It could be that some other plugin has a function to control those icons and you may want to check there.

There are only two other plugins in the installation, Wordfence, and the Coming Soon and Maintenance page plugin by Web factory. I have both of these plugins in use (together) with BackWPup in other installations of WordPress (and on the same host), and the icon is present. Also, I tried deactivating them, but that did not resolve the problem.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your reply.

This is strange. The plugin does not have an option to hide on its own. This would be done either by WordPress core, another plugin, or any custom code added.

Have you tried inspecting the top bar or else try reinstalling the plugin?

I was hoping not to have to configure my backup job all over again (wish there was a way to preserve or export those settings when deleting the plugin for troubleshooting purposes). However, I had also concluded that reinstalling was probably necessary, and indeed, it did correct the problem.

I don’t know whether it’s relevant, but in case it comes up again, this installation of BackWPup is in a newly created subdomain where the root domain has its own separate installation of WordPress and BackWPup.

Here’s a weird one. The icon was present after the reinstall this morning, but now upon logging back in, it’s disappeared again. What the heck???

    Hi,

Unfortunately, this is not something that can be controlled from within the plugin, making it difficult to comment on.

You may ask hosting support to check logs at that specific time to see what’s happening.

What specific time?? I have no way to know when anything is happening, assuming something is. As I asked in my original question (and you still haven’t answered), what could cause this? I have already disabled all plugins, changed to a default theme, reinstalled BackWPup, and even reinstalled WordPress, BackWPup is working fine with the same set of plugins in other WordPress installations on the same host, which seems to rule out a hosting issue. The only thing I can suggest (and which I don’t have a way to test for) is that the problem is somehow related to the installation being in a subdomain, where the root installation has its own installation of BackWPup.

I’ve done all of the standard troubleshooting, ruling out the common causes (I’d done most of it before I posted my question – this is not my first rodeo). What I need from you is your specific knowledge of how this feature is implemented and what could cause it to not function, and all I’m getting is the feeling that you haven’t even bothered to read my question very thoroughly before trying to pass off the blame to someone else. I’m not looking for someone to blame, I’m looking for a solution.
