For some reason, the top surname in the widget is “unknown” at 1622, which is odd considering there are only 422 individuals in the list. I had thought perhaps it was a tally of females for whom no maiden name was known (my tree dates back to the 1700s), but that still doesn’t account for the high number. Any idea? Thanks.

This sort of issue is usually caused by invalid Gedcom data. If you email me a copy of the gedcom I will take a look.

What program created the gedcom file? If you open the gedcom with a plain text editor such as Notepad check the 1 Name entries I suspect that there will be an issue there, they should be in the form of 1 NAME Elizabeth /Stansfield/ for example.

Okay thanks, I will email you a copy. I used the MyHeritage.com software to export a specific branch of my tree.

I received a copy of this Gedcom and on analysis MyHeritage still leave records with some data in them if you select exclude some of the individuals on export. As a result there are records with no names which Gedshow correctly displays. This is a fault with the MyHeritage gedcom export routine.
