Top Navigation sub pages missing?

Hi

I am just taking a look at the Navigation within Customize and have set my Primary and Footer Navigation to Header and my Top Navigation to Menu 1 (my menu). Now it is set this way it no longer shows sub pages, just wanted to know if this is standard functionality i.e. will only ever show top level menu items, or can I change something to be able to access the sub pages.
