  • I am having the same issue.

I and another blogger are also not able to use the editor with settings like Font size, Font choice, undo buttons being unavailable even though they are set in the Settings.

    Having the same issue.

Think this is a change in the TinyMCE editor. If the Tools menu is empty it’s not shown. What sub-menus did you have there before it disappeared?

I, too, have lost the Tools menu item (and drop down). It happened when I dragged the Background color button to the second toolbar. To be sure it isn’t a plugin conflict, I created a new website on my IIS 7.5 server with WordPress 4.9.8 and installed the single plugin TinyMCE Advanced 4.8.0. I opened the Hello World! post and saw that initially the Tools item showed in the menu between Format and Table, but after adding the Background color and refreshing the edit page, Tools was no longer present in the menu. Removing the Background color did not restore the Tools menu option, but a database restore would do that. The same happened when I added the horizontal bar button (and maybe others). Is there a more subtle way of restoring to the Tools menu (preferably with additional buttons?

There is a simple solution that I had overlooked – I dragged the Source Code button onto a toolbar, and the Tools menu option reappears!

@angusmacleod what I think happened there is you had the plugin options set up quite some time ago, then when you added the Background color button, you re-saved them and that updated the rest of the buttons and toolbars.

There was a change in the TinyMCE toolbar some time ago that moved some items to new locations. My theory is that when you re-saved the options, the Tools menu became empty and disappeared. Then after adding another button that also sets a Tools menu item, it reappeared again.

Andrew, you are right. My test installation was brand new, and it looks like the actual default settings for the toolbars include the Source Code option, but the settings page shows Source Code as an unused button, so if the settings are changed and saved, Source Code is no longer in the menu.
