• Is there such a thing as too many plugins running? I have been told by the people that administer the servers for my website that I should not have more than 3 plugins running.
I have been having an issue with too much server utilization and was told I can’t have the wordpress admin panel open for too long, and that I have way too many plugins running (34) is that an “Optimal” number of plugins? I would think it’s more of what each plugin does rather than the number of plugins active.

  • There’s no such thing as an optimal number of plugins, or minimum or maximum. It all comes down to how powerful the server is. Also remember that your theme can make more of a differnce then any plugin does if it’s not done the right way or if it’s doing something complicated, so it’s not always correct to say that it’s the plugins fault. On top of that each plugin adds a completely different load to your site, so two big plugins could easily add the same load as 20-30 small ones.

I do agree that the number of plugins that you use would depend completely on what you need them to do. If a plugin doesn’t do anything that you need it to, then yes get rid of it. If it does something that you do need, then leave it.

If your current hosting company can’t handle the site, I would say move (but please don’t ask for recommendations because that gets threads shut down very quickly!) and if you have the budget you could even look at a dedicated server or a VPS if you really need something faster.
