• Resolved pipd

I took over this site a year ago and there seem to be so many random plug-ins and I have no clue if they are all necessary. I would like to be able to use the new WordPress 5.9 features but don’t seem to be able to “find” them. Is there anyway of finding out which are irrelevant?
    Thanks in advance

  • Hi! Could you share a list with the names of the plugins you have installed?

    Thank you Javier for replying.

Atomic Blocks – Gutenberg Blocks Collection
    CF Page or Post Duplicator
    Classic Editor
    Contact Form 7
    ConvertKit
    Disable auto-updates
    Select Disable Gutenberg
    Disable Gutenberg
    Download Monitor
    DuplicatorEasy Video Player
    Really Simple SSL
    Simple Download Monitor
    SiteOrigin CSS
    Smush
    Select W3 Total Cache
    W3 Total Cache
    Wordfence Security
    WP Search Insights
    Select WP Theme Test
    WP Theme Test

After a quick look at the list, I don’t see a lot of overlap of functionalities between the plugins themselves.

In general, for plugins like SiteOrigin CSS or Post Duplicator that extend the interface and add alternative ways to manage your site (updating the CSS or duplicating posts), you could decide to disable them if you don’t use those functionalities that much.

Then, WP Theme Test hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress. So it could be a good candidate to review and maybe disable (again, only if you don’t need what the plugin offers).

My general advice is to visit each plugin page and read the description to understand if their functionality is still relevant for you. And if it’s not, you can disable the plugin temporarily and test your site for a while.

    Thank you Javier.

Will take your advice and review.

This kinda site is not my forte and all I am trying to do is match the customer’s other business site which is on Wix, to this WordPress site but to no avail. I was trying to get the features of the new WordPress 5.9 block building ability and to make it easier for me but doesn’t seem to have worked.

    Thanks anyways.

Oh! I think that’s because you have installed the plugin “Classic Editor”. If you disable it, you’ll be able to use Gutenberg and all the cool blocks.

Cool will give that a bash

I deactivated it but just get the Avia Layout builder, am I doing something wrong?

You are probably looking at Gutenberg. It is basically a page builder. The classic block builder editor would have looked like a text editor.

unless you are planning on creating themes and distributing them you probably don’t need the WP Theme Test. Also, you should turn off disable Gutenberg if you are going to start using Gutenberg.

    Thanks for your feedback.
If I disable Gutenberg I just a code and not the visual of the blocks. I am really being that dumb?

The plugin you have installed disable Gutenberg disable the Gutenberg block editor. Gutenberg is enabled by default. The plugin is used to disable the Block editor.

    Thanks @mrtom414.
I have deactivated “disable Gutenberg” and I still don’t get that new funky WordPress 5.9 block layout.

Even with the Visual Editor selected I still get the layout looking like:

    [av_section min_height=’custom’ min_height_px=’10’ padding=’no-padding’ shadow=’no-border-styling’ bottom_border=’no-border-styling’ bottom_border_diagonal_color=’#333333′ bottom_border_diagonal_direction=” bottom_border_style=” custom_arrow_bg=” id=” color=’main_color’ background=’bg_color’ custom_bg=’#2e3192′ background_gradient_color1=” background_gradient_color2=” background_gradient_direction=’vertical’ src=” attachment=” attachment_size=” attach=’scroll’ position=’top left’ repeat=’no-repeat’ video=” video_ratio=’16:9′ overlay_opacity=’0.5′ overlay_color=” overlay_pattern=” overlay_custom_pattern=” av_element_hidden_in_editor=’0′ av_uid=’av-kh06ba2i’]`

Below it is Avia layout like before.

    Thanks

That is because the posts were created using the tiny MCE editor and shortcode. All the code that was created using the MCE editor will be placed in the classic block. Gutenberg uses REACT to edit code in the editor. The tiny MCE editor used PHP, shortcodes, and widgets to implement the functionality. They still work but are being replaced by blocks. You can check with the developers for the plugins to see if there are any blocks to replace the shortcode and widgets.

@mrtom414 Many thanks for your explanation. Will try and get hold of them.

    Stay safe!
