i was writing a post today and it required a lot of links with in. i’d say there were probably 15 links all in all located within the post itself. i clicked save or update, and it just sat there thinking. i waited, it did nothing, then after a few minutes, the page failed to load and i got an error. but the weird thing is that if while in the middle of the save/update i just clicked “view site” it would take me to my site all the changes would have taken affect. i couldn’t figure out what was wrong, but then i thought about the links, so i pulled them all out and tried loading it again. worked perfectly, loaded in a second!! so then i started adding the links in one at a time. everything was going fine until i got past 3 links in one post. with 3 links the page saved just fine, but once i added that 4th link, it went back to crazy town. does wordpress do some sort of link check that slows down the save time? also, this whole mess resulted in my newest post (the one with all the links) not showing up in my RSS reader (netnewswire). what’s the deal?

  • Go into your admin panel > Options > Discussion… and see if the very first checkbox is checked. Read carefully the explanation in the brackets ??

that was perfect. that completely fixed the problem. i couldn’t believe how fast that was. seriously, you are amazing!!!

By links I take it that you mean URL’s within your post. I’ve made posts with much more than 4 links and have had no problems. WordPress largely just takes your post, ensures it’s XHTML valid, adds the necessary <P> where appropriate and stores it in the database.

It does not do link checking to my knowledge. The only reason posts can take forever to be saved is if you have a large number of sites that you PING after you post/update/edit on your blog. So go to Options->Writing and see what Update Services you are pinging.

thank you. i checked that as well, but i only have one there… rpc.pingomatic.com. i think it was the “options > discussion > Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting” check box. that fixed it. thanks again.
