Tons of spam unblocked

  • I am under a sort of spam attack and the spam messages sent through Contact Form 7 are not being blocked. I know the field “I’m not a robot” is not shown since the update but I assumed that the functionality would still exist.

    Furthermore a significant part of these spam messages are completely undetected and treated like valid messages from Contact Form 7. I am sitting here for hours filtering out the spam messages that went through.

    We fixed the bugs in Contact Form 7 by using the “Invisible reCaptcha” plugin By Mihai Chelaru and turning off the broken reCaptcha in Contact form 7.

    It is sad that the plugin author sends you to a link that offers no solutions. The problem is not at our email level but is at his faulty plugin that was drastically hurt by the implementation of reCaptch 3.

    Thanks, but the FAQ doesn’t help. For once, I have been under the attack by these sort of spam before and it stopped after I started using Contact Form 7. It just started to come through again after the last update.

    Secondly, I cannot block any words or IPs as there are only empty messages sent and the IP is different every time. These sort of spam attacks are using the automated mail sent to piggyback the process and sending out their own spam.

    @calebweb: Thank you, I will try this. Right now our mailserver is absued to send thousand of spam mails which is not acceptable.

    I just installed a plugin to bring back v2, hope its working- Thanks again, @calebweb!

    No problem @thebirdsnewnest. It has worked for us so far. It would have been nicer if the Contact Form 7 plugin author would have left v2 and then rolled out v3 of reCaptcha too, but sadly they did not. Then by doing that thousands of users were slammed with tons of spam with unprotected forms and even when we updated to v3 of reCaptcha it simply did not stop the spam. Only when we installed the mentioned plugin and put v2 back on our sites did the spam stop.

    Spam blocking works for me quite well, except this certain kind of spam.

    Unfortunately, lots of spam is not identified, but also too many real messages are falsly flagged as spam, so it takes me lots of time every week to sort out the false flags.
