To mail not validating with use of pipe field

Hi!
I am using contact form 7 to set up a form where the user selects the department he/she wants to contact from a dropdown in the form.
I looked at the documentation and set up the select field in the form as specified with pipes – that seems to be working find in the form on the webpage.But, when I set up the mail template in WordPress admin and I put the field name [my-dropdown] in the “to” field.
But that returns the error “Invalid mailbox syntax is used.”I read the documentation over and over, and I’m dont get what I am missing.

Is this method not longer supported?
I’m using version 5.0.1 of the plugin.
