To: field with period in email address failing

If the form TO field is set to a gmail address with a “.” in it, the email contact is never received but there are no error messages.

If I use my non period email address (with an underscore instead of period), the contact form works as expected.

I presume that there is an old school check for special characters that currently blocks emails with periods in them or something?

Please help!
