Exactly my thoughts too. Or maybe a way to add our own layouts.

In theory you have away to override the template but with out using a “template” (stand alone file with all the html) for us to start with its almost impossible for us to piece this together. Please consider doing at least some sample template files we can work from.

These are very interesting ideas (both the link as a title and providing template/view overrides possibilities – like what we offer for the Events Calendar).

I have submitted these ideas to the author of Image widget Plus: https://theeventscalendar.com/product/wordpress-image-widget-plus/

But for now, I believe the best way to achieve your goal would be to prevent the widget title from being stripped (via your functions.php file) and simply add the <a href= tag around the title.

I wish I had a better answer for you, but for now it’s the best one I have unfortunately.
