title breaking over thumbnail issue

We have a problem where if the post has a long title, it goes on top of the thumbnail instead of alongside it. Is there a way to fix this? When it happens the next post under it gets pushed into overlapping on the post below it, or over to the right.

I also tried doing a custom template in hopes of rearranging the order they are in, following the instructions in the Readme. But I see no evidence that it is reading the custom template even though I followed instructions.
