• Hi guys,

Here is one tip for the development team: right now it’s not possible to highlight and change the color of single words.

There is a plugin called “Advanced Rich Text Tools for Gutenberg”, but this functionality should be core.

Speaking of which, I an many others use different colors to make our dialogues more compelling.
A block that would be super helpful is one to facilitate text dialogues between different characters.

There’s an issue around inline text colors that’s been closed: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/6080 I don’t think there’s any plans to natively support inline text colors in Gutenberg in the future.

This could be very cool. How do you imagine it working?

    Hey Mel,

    Thanks for the update.
That’s surprising the team doesn’t think different colors for different words would be useful, but that’s why it’s also good there are plenty of plugin authors.

    DIALOGUE BLOCK

I’d imagine some simple pre-formatting for a dialogue block.
For example “speaker 1” and “speaker 2” fields where people insert the speakers’ names, which would then be automatically boldened (boldened, is that correct, you see what I mean :).
They should also allow the “Advanced Rich Text Tools for Gutenberg” to change the speakers’ names colors though so that people could give different color codes to make the difference even more visual (imagine the stereotypical guy’s name in blue and the girl in pink).

Then a field for what they are saying, which would automatically end up in Italic -or at least a slightly different font-.

Then an option to add a third or a fourth speakers for people who need it, but I’d guess that 80%+ of the times people would only only need two.

Finally, the whole block would automatically and slightly indent, to make it graphically even more appealing -and obvious to everyone scanning the page there is a dialogue-.

Not too complex overall, but could add some real value, make articles even more interactive and save a lot of time to the writers.

This would work really well with the “chat” post format too. Thanks for writing up this idea — I’ve added it to a GitHub issue: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/13062

Aha, looks like there was an existing issue: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/954
