I was able to run a backup on a particular site this morning no problem. Now when I go to run it it’s not completing (the most recent attempt has been running for 27 minutes — it’s not a large site).

I checked with hosting support (SiteGround) and they increased the Apache timeout value limit but that didn’t help.

The errors I’m seeing in the error log are along the lines of:
Timeout waiting for output from CGI script /home/thissite/public_html/wp-cron.php, referer: https://www.thissite.com/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron=1493651947.9270799160003662109375

    and
Timeout waiting for output from CGI script /home/thissite/public_html/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, referer: https://www.thissite.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php

    Please advise? Thanks.

You wouldn’t have any kind of security plugin that blocks some or all of the ajax requests, do you? I see this sometimes with security plugins – it’ll time out trying to connect using the ajax, but since it’s blocked it never connects.

You had the issue with the symlink before, didn’t you? How did that turn out? We weren’t able to isolate it much more on our end.

Nothing that would have been any different from when I ran it this morning? I’m disabling all browser extensions and trying again. Nope — no go — still running almost 15 minutes later. Any other ideas?

[I did a database-only backup on that same site just now with no problem.]

I think I switched to another backup plugin for the site that was having the symlink issue (I’ll have to check).

Still having the problem with the plugin not backing up a core WP file because it has “dev” in the filename and I have a “dev” subdomain I’m excluding from the backup. I still have to manually copy the WP file over each time — wish you could fix that one already….

    Thanks.

Ahhh — this site moved to SiteGround recently with wildcard SSL — and I believe symlinks rise again.

Did you specify the site root link for that one yet? If the setup was the same and it carried your settings over from before the SSL being applied, that could be causing the site links to glitch.

I wish we could get to the root of the specific issue you are having. Since I run on Siteground as well I tried multiple times to replicate the symlink issue but I’m not able to do it exactly ??

We have figured a way out to rewrite it, just haven’t been able to get it completely rewritten.

I’ve actually taken a plunge at trying to troubleshoot the way we’re matching filenames but right now, the flexibility is hard to reproduce with every other way I’ve looked into re-doing it. I’m still looking though – and happy to do any additional troubleshooting we can do in order to help pin these down.

If you’d like to take this to private support you can email me at [email protected] and you can link me to this ticket. If you’re able to connect me to support as well that’d be great – but we can also do that later. I’d just like to try and dig into it a bit more closely if possible.

Let me know and I’ll stay in touch from my end too,

    Kat
