Timeline for Fully Functioning Category Overide?

Thanks for the support! The timeline for this is a little shaky at the moment. I’m trying to get a lot of work off my plate so I can focus on my plugins for a while.

My current plan is to spend a lot of October working on this and widget wrangler. I have a lot of good ideas for both plugins, but have been buried in work.

Thanks for the reply Jonathan. Appreciate it. Keep up the good work! I look forward to this feature if it ever rolls out. And let me know if you need someone to run it through a real world test. Coming from Drupal, I miss how easy it is for a “View” type function. Heads up, having the code work with our themes that are mobile responsive would be great as well.

Thanks for sticking around patiently :). I haven’t moved on improving overrides yet because I’m not exactly happy with my options.

I disabled Page queries because my method for overriding a WP route was not in a site owner’s best interest. With a dynamic route/url/page in WP, you are very limited with what you can do to that page. No other plugin will be able to extend it.

Overrides are similar. If you hijack the category/archive pages with QW, you lose the ability to have other plugins modify/extend the hijacked page. Basically, it’s too hacky to be sustainable.

So I’ve been back-of-mind thinking on how to mitigate this fundamental problem before continuing to develop overrides. Chances are I’ll need to work within the existing WP category query and template hierarchy in some way.

I’ll move this up to the top of my list and try to come up with something better. There are a few override related feature requests I need to give some attention.

Hey Jonathan, thank you so much for your time in the reply and for keeping this function alive. I hope my feedback will give you inspiration and energy to be able to solve the technical issues that come with this feature.

As someone coming from Drupal, Views was so important to style (easily without much css) the look and feel of Category pages. WordPress just makes it so difficult to do this. Having tasted what your plugin can do with Widgets (still figuring out the CSS to style it), I think once you sort out the WP issues with Overiding a category, I will be the first in line to test and run your Overide function. It was a powerful feature on Drupal and I sincerely, and eagerly, await your roll out. So exciting!

I spent some time on overrides, and came up with a result I’m happy with. Next step is to write a small upgrade script, write some documentation, and test it a lot.

It will break existing overrides (hence the need for an upgrade script), so I don’t recommend installing it on a production site.

Alright, cleared cache, updated to the latest Version 1.5.33.

Tried to filter via Category and a Tag and both showed the same problem.

Post Titlepost_title
Featured Imagefeatured_image, 300-200
Post Datepost_date
Post Authorpost_author, name

1. Post date = -0001
2. Only 1 post shows (with pagination enabled)
3. No featured Image
4. Topics (categories is not listed, just the word Topics)
5. No Tag list under each post item
6. No Author Name

Tried a variety of options with Add Field but nothing I could do made things display properly. What am I missing?

Sorry for the slow reply.

I’m a little unclear on what you’re trying to achieve, but I think you need to change the Row Style to “Fields”, and add a field for each piece of the post you’d like to display.

If that isn’t helpful, could you describe in detail the result you want?

I got teh fields part and the Preview Query is working. But after I add a Category inside “Overrides” and then click Save, Category: turns into :NONE. Are you seeing this too?
