Tiled Galleries using full sized imaged

I have a Jetpack Tiles Gallery displayed in the twenty-fourteen theme as a side-widget, as well as using tiled galleries in posts on my self-hosted WP instance (chromosphere.co.uk – all latest versions). The images to generate the tiles for the tiled galleries seem to still load the full size image (and let the browser do the resizing itself) which is bandwidth heavy, and causes v slow pageload times. I see others posting about this:
Yet none of these offer any news on why this can’t use a suitable thumbnail instead of resorting to loading the full size image to serve the tiles? Is there a way of getting the tiled gallery to use a smaller source image for display of the tiling?
