Tiled Galleries showing blank images, photon failing
-
Hi there, I have a tiled gallery and two images refuse to show up on Jetpack. I have even named them different names and resized them differently and took them again but Jetpack just doesn’t want to show them properly.
Check it out right here I will keep them up for a day or twoi:
https://www.bayareawebs.com/portfolio/bay-area-scuba/Basically I get this image showing as a blank:
https://i1.wp.com/www.bayareawebs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Bay-Area-Scuba-Services.png?resize=336%2C336
However,
https://www.bayareawebs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Bay-Area-Scuba-Services.png?resize=336%2C336
works perfectly.https://i1.wp.com/www.bayareawebs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Bay-Area-Scuba-Services.png
Shows just a blank box.
How to fix?

Could you try to open one of these images in an image editor, save it in a different format like .jpg, and upload it again? I wonder if the problem could be linked to the image format.
Let me know how it goes.
Hi thanks for the reply,
I have inserted into the same gallery one of the .png files that wasn’t showing as a .jpg. It also does not show.
When looking at https://i1.wp.com/www.bayareawebs.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Bay-Area-Scuba-Services.jpg?resize=336%2C336 the file is a square

Shows the correct image.
Furthermore – this bug is even worse!
head to https://www.bayareawebs.com/portfolio/ – I’ve just enabled photon so you could check it out. Please post back so I can disable it after you’ve taken a look.
Most of the images are not loading – some are some aren’t. All the images were made using the same process so it makes no sense that some would show and others won’t.
Anyway I fixed this by disabling jetpack and installing “Slim Jetpack”.
Jetpack and photon resizing are broken. This isn’t the only site on which it happened but it is the site on which it was most prevalent. There are serious issues with photon and, without a way to flush the photon cache, it is unusable.
I have the same issue. When using jetpack mosaic tiled galleries, I just get an empty square: https://www.dropbox.com/s/z6yswuse8eeuqoi/Screen%20Shot%202013-10-21%20at%209.09.19%20PM.png
@martinamartina – please start your own thread, and include a link to your site.

The original image doesn’t seem to exist anymore, so I’m afraid I won’t be able to find out more based on this example.

I noticed that you’re using CloudFlare, Pagespeed, or a Minify plugin on this page. It might be worth deactivating all these services, one at a time, in order to find out if one of them could conflict with Photon.

I’d love to be able to investigate more if Photon is still enabled on some of your sites.
It’s also worth noting that you don’t need to use Slim Jetpack if you want to use Jetpack without Photon; you can simply deactivate the Photon module as explained here:

I have reuploaded the same image. But all images don’t work, like the first 80% of portfolio page. 1 2 3 etc… It isn’t just one image.

Yes, I am now because I can’t sit around with my website in a broken state. When the issues were reported there was no cloudflare, no minify, and no pagespeed – I kept the site in a broken state with all services disabled for one day. As the issue has been resolved (don’t use Jetpack/photon because they are broken and there is nothing I can do to fix them) I’ve enabled these services and abandoned using jetpack.

Sorry but that’s not true. Tiled galleries use photon for image resizing even if photon is disabled. Which is why when tiled galleries are enabled I have a problem with few images – when photon is enabled 80% of the images on my site stop working.
I’ll tell you this much – there isn’t anything wrong with my images, photon is being dumb and making my images 1x1px blank squares.
Take a look at this short video: https://youtu.be/2H1HqyUGJAQ
I enable jetpack photon and all images break. Although pagespeed, minify, and cloudflare are on the behavior is 100% exactly the same as when they were all off so the issue is not with any of those configurations – it is with photon deciding to make my images 1x1px squares.I have reuploaded the same image. Thanks. I understand your frustration. There must be a conflict somewhere between one of the aspects of your site configuration and Jetpack. I’d love to be able to understand the issue; it could help us fix a potential bug.
Unfortunately, I don’t understand why the images won’t load when you activate Photon. When I load them separately, they seem to load properly:

https://i.wpne.ws/S6SLTiled galleries use photon for image resizing even if photon is disabled.
Correct. I had forgotten about Tiled Galleries, my bad.
The ?resize=300%2C200 seems to be a problem – these images are already 300×200
Here’s the screenshot you were looking for : https://i.imgur.com/rZotCyH.png
I also have a similar bug on a different website, so here’s a screenshot and a video of that:
In short – photon adds a ?resize=210%2C150 to an image that is already sized properly – and ends up sizing it bad. That’s on https://clearwatervision.org/ and has been happening for a good half year.https://i.imgur.com/ItTQiEv.png
https://youtu.be/vxWIV494ZBwIn short – photon adds a ?resize=210%2C150 to an image that is already sized properly – and ends up sizing it bad
The resize parameter is added to the images when they include these dimensions in the filename. If you were to disable Photon on your site, browser inspector should show that the image filenames all end like so:
https://www.bayareawebs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Chiropractic-Center-of-Walnut-Creek-300×200.png
https://i0.wp.com/www.bayareawebs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Chiropractic-Center-of-Walnut-Creek.png?resize=300%2C200If you do not want the images to include the resize parameter, you could try choosing “Full size” when inserting the images, instead of “thumbnail” or “medium”.
However, Photon appears to work on your site at the moment:
https://i.wpne.ws/S85JDoes it work on your end too?
Hi and thanks,
I was able to fix the issue by working with a jetpack support member via email – the support person cleared the photon cache and almost all images began working. I then uploaded new images for the ones that weren’t and it began to work.
It is hypothesized that the issue was caused by a break of connectivity between the site and photon.
